Title width589 / 600 px
Description width960 / 920 px, cut off

How to use it

  1. 1 Type the page title and meta description.
  2. 2 Add the page's URL for the breadcrumb line.
  3. 3 Shorten anything the preview cuts off, ideally ending on a whole idea.

Why width, not characters

Google cuts a title by how wide it renders, not by how many characters it has: a title of narrow letters fits more characters than one of wide capitals. The preview measures your text in the font the result uses, Arial, at the sizes Google shows.

Google does not publish its limits. The preview uses about 600 pixels for a desktop title and about 920 for a description, the widths desktop results are commonly measured at, so treat the cut as an estimate.

When Google rewrites anyway

Google sometimes replaces a title or description with text from the page that it judges better for the query. A specific, accurate title that matches the page's h1 is the one it rewrites least.

Questions

Is what I type sent anywhere?
No. The preview is drawn in this page, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Are the limits exact?
No. A title fits about 600 pixels and a description about 920, as measured in Arial at 20 and 14 pixels. Google does not publish the limits, so treat the cut as an estimate.
Why does my live result look different?
Google may rewrite it for a query, or show a date, a site name or rich result details beside it. The preview shows the basic result.
