# Rank tracking

> Track rankings for any domain on a schedule, on desktop and mobile, read positions, trends and the position matrix, and see each check's cost.

**A tracker checks where a domain ranks for a list of keywords, daily, weekly, monthly or on demand, on desktop, mobile or both. Every position is stored with the time it was seen, and a check's price depends on its depth.**

A rank tracker reads the live search results for each of its keywords and
records where one domain appears. A project can hold several trackers, for
example one for your own domain and one for each competitor.

## Create a tracker

On **Rank tracking**, choose **Track a domain** and set:

| Setting | Options | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Domain | Any domain; subdomains count as the same site | none |
| Schedule | daily, weekly, monthly, or manual (only when you run it) | weekly |
| Devices | desktop, mobile, or both | both |
| Depth | how many results to read: 10, 20, 50 or 100 | 20 |

A keyword that is not within the depth is stored as **not ranking**, never as
a zero. Pause a tracker from its settings to stop scheduled checks without
losing its history; **Resume checks** starts them again.

## Add keywords

Add keywords from the project's [saved keywords](/docs/saved-keywords-and-tags)
or paste them, one per line. The cap counts tracked keywords across all of a
project's trackers: 250 on
Pro, 500 on
Studio and 1,000 on
Agency.

## What a check costs

The data vendor bills one page of 10 results at a time, so depth sets the
price. One check costs 20 credits per page, per keyword, per
device:

| Depth | Pages | Credits per keyword per device |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 10 | 1 | 20 |
| 20 | 2 | 40 |
| 50 | 5 | 5 × 20 |
| 100 | 10 | 10 × 20 |

The tracker screen shows the price of its next check before you run it. A
check holds its whole price before the first lookup and is charged only for
what it bought. If the balance runs out partway, the check pauses and carries
on after a top-up.

A scheduled check repeats every 1, 7 or 30 days after the last one. **Run check
now** starts one at once.

## Read the results

A tracker's page has three views of the same stored positions:

- **Latest positions**: each keyword's position from the last check, with the
figures above it: tracked keywords, average position, how
many are in the top 10 and how many were not found.
- **Trend**: for each check in the last 30, 90 or 365 days, how many keywords
ranked 1 to 3, 4 to 10 and 11 to 20, and how many ranked lower or not at all.
- **Position matrix**: every keyword against the last 5, 10 or 30 checks, to
  spot when a keyword moved.

Choose **History** on a keyword to open its full position history. Each check
also stores the URL that held the position; the
[assistant](/docs/project-assistant) and the [MCP server](/docs/mcp-server)
return it with every position.

## After a plan change

A downgrade can leave a project tracking more keywords than the new plan
allows. Nothing is deleted. Scheduled checks then check the oldest tracked
keywords, up to the new limit, and adding keywords is refused until the
project is back under it.
